Rather than forget about it, we should speak more about it and how it can be avoided. If counsellors on campus take a proactive approach, Nikhil Mahatme, a final year MBBS student of GMC, says, "I feel even students should not dismiss talk of suicide. We keep talking to them all through their years in campus and like to keep the approach proactive." A counsellor understands this very well." Says Dr S C Batra, who is the medical officer at VNIT, "At our centre, when a student takes admission, he is asked to fill a form where he lists his psychological problems/stress factors as well. Every student is of different mental makeup and comes from varied backgrounds. Akshay Dongarwar, a IInd year student of VNIT says, "We have friendly counsellors on campus and we can talk for hours to them. In an age, where students feel all kinds of pressures, a visit to the counsellor on campus doesn't harm. We need to identify our real friends and talk more with them rather than merely connect with them!" There's a habit among youngsters to share everything and anything online, and while some can deal with the consequences, some cannot. Then what stops them from sharing their depression? Says Invnish Gujral, a physiotherapy student from NKP Salve College, "I feel too much connectivity is inviting a problem where there's none. In the palm of their hand, they hold their phones that keep these students connected 24x7 with their friends.
